As fairy tales go, the ‘Princess and the Pea’ was always one of the more, how can we put it, curious ones. After all, it was largely based on the premise of the lead female character attempting to get a good night’s sleep whilst balanced precariously atop a stack of mattresses; purely because of an ill-placed pea. Still, this tall tale has never stopped the critically acclaimed contemporary fine artist, Kerry Darlington referring to the Hans Christen Anderson example of a folkloric craft as being amongst her childhood favourites. And therein, hardly surprising that the best-selling Darlington has chosen to pay compositional tribute to book/story illustrator, Edmund Dulac’s fabled original in the 19” x 39” canvas parameters of this very latest hand-embellished and glossed limited edition reveal. Naturally, Darlington has added her own signature visual turns aplenty too, not least in an illustrative nod and wink to some of the rarest images sitting temptingly in this imaginary bedroom. With just 295 examples up for grabs this early 2018, we’re hereby inviting enquiries as of now.
