Sue Hemming

Sue Hemming was born in Birmingham in 1956. From an early age she drew and painted – as most children do – but as she matured so did her creative instincts. Having initially trained as a secretary, she worked in a bank for two years before moving over into the family business. She was there until 1985 when her first child was born.

She had married Nigel Hemming in 1982, but being an artist’s wife inhibited her creativity at first. However, quite soon, an overpowering "urge" led her into a whole new range of arts and crafts. In 1998, Sue and her husband set up their own publishing business "Nigel Hemming Editions". Due to contractual commitments elsewhere, Nigel was unable to self-publish his work immediately, so the company was launched with a set of four naïve cat images by Sue.

Over the next eighteen months she had a further ten such images printed which all enjoyed success. However, by the middle of 1999 - as Nigel became free to self-publish - she grew dissatisfied with the work she was producing, feeling that it failed to give her the true creative fulfillment which she desired. So began a voyage of discovery! What has emerged from this quest is quite startling – a style and technique which is both vibrant and exciting. What’s more, it is highly distinctive and unusual, perhaps best described as "semi-abstract", having elements of both cubism and the colourist movement encapsulated in it.

The abstract style has had its true meaning somewhat corrupted over time and tends these days to be used for describing any art form which does not conform to a more traditional format. For this reason its use can sometimes deter people from appreciating true "abstracted" imagery. Despite Sue’s bold, striking and unusual approach, her work is still extremely accessible. An abiding love of animals, particularly cats, has been the inspiration for much of her work. Also, her great sense of humour has resulted in truly imaginative titles, thus adding another dimension to every image.

Sue now lives in Stourbridge, West Midlands, with her husband and their two children, James and Elizabeth. Sue Hemming is a member of the Fine Art Trade Guild.
