This picture has one of the young lads from ‘A River Runs through It’ in the picture he is kicking a ball down an alley. This child is clearly loving having a kick about, even if he is on his own. He is wearing short trousers, Wellington boots and a green hat not the right clothes to play football but this obviously doesn’t phase this young boy. If you look back through Millar’s painting this little boy appears a lot. Millar based this young boy on himself. Millar said “That boy is me, I paint him a lot. It is a very simple image.” He then talks about his childhood “I was always out playing football. In fact, I’d go out at nine in the morning and not get back ‘til ten at night. I played so much I ended up with a deformed bone in my knee.”

Newcastle is very well known for its football and some of it most famous football stars have been Alan Shearer and Kevin Keegan. In the 1970 Kevin Keegan had the famous 'Poodle perm' which has regularly turned up at the top of worst haircuts surveys.
