Seeking inspiration from the Old Masters as an eager to learn adolescent, debutant contemporary figurative artist, Nigel Mason looked to the iconic likes of Degas, Whistler and Rembrandt back in his formative years, coupled with regular visits to Leeds Art Gallery en route to The Louvre in Paris, to view a Picasso retrospective exhibition as a 20-year old craving an artistic awakening. Fast forward a number of years – and separate stints as both a mature student and a period of teaching art - and Spring 2016 officially welcomes the much-anticipated debut limited edition collection by Mason; and as part and parcel of its advent this hand-signed giclee on canvas. ‘Busy Waiter’ is essentially a 7.75” vignette which captures a person employed in the service industry fleetingly distracted by the presence of something caught off canvas, yet which temporarily takes our gaze from the romanticizing couple pictured in the foreground.
